Morrisons : Pie squared

Morrisons mince pie

Morrisons deep filled mince pies. 6 for £1.19 or 2 packets for £1.80…I wasn’t fooled, I only bought one pack. Packaging was particularly chirstmas tacky, stars, christmas trees etc and the pies themselves on the cover didn’t look that great. Now these pies claimed to be deep filled, not the case as the pies turned out to be mostly…case. These were hard work and really dry, needed alot of tea to get it down. I gave most of these away at work…just because I couldn’t endure the pack. I still have a cheeky tesco finest one at home, still on top at the moment.

Overall a disappointment pay the extra 4 pence at tesco as it stands. I was going to give these pies 3 out of 10 but for some reason they’ve annoyed me while writing, so now they’re only getting 2.

One for the builders me thinks

tesco mince pie

I’m a big fan of our local tesco it always does good stuff at a reasonable price. These were there finest…apparently. I just assume they slap the word finest on everything just to bump the cost up a bit, these however only cost £1.23 for 6. Even at finest standard, a bargain compaired to starbucks solitary butter beast. First impressions were good, nice box, not overly christmassy. Non offensive.

Taste wise pretty decent, could have done with a bit more filling. The pastry was bang on and had a nice coarse sugary coating. This pie had been laced with cognac, not too much but a nice hint. Nicest one so far and at a decent price. I give it 8.5 pies just because tesco have so many different kinds of mince pies and can’t believe that for their finest these should be that cheap.

It's good but it's not quite right

Starbucks : Who ate all the pies?

starbucks mince pies

Tis the season and all that. I love christmas…everyone does, but it’s this time of year everyone goes nuts. All the ridiculous decorations go up, the annoying christmas music is piped everywhere, those crap shops that sell tacky christmas stuff turn up and the average shopper on the street turns into crazed must finish my christmas shopping today maniacs. But definately the best thing about christmas is the food, why does all the good stuff hide the rest of the year round? last year I went on the hunt for the ultimate christmas sandwich..any excuse. This year I thought i’d keep to the same theme but mix it up a bit. So it’s on…where can I get the best mince pie?

It’s not even december yet but I couldn’t wait. Straight off to starbucks for my cheeky gingerbread latte…the dark cherry mocha is by far the best. The order was in £1.45 for my all butter mince pie. First impression was good, it looked pretty hefty. Nothing particularly exciting about the filling if i’m honest it was pretty deep, I was a bit let down by the top however, too buttery almost like shortbread. Always difficult to get the ball rolling when you have nothing to compare it to.

But i’ll give it a 6 out of 10. Just because it’s pretty pricey and I could get a whole box from my supermarket for that.

Must try harder

Christmas Sandwich : Subway

subway filth

Subway is filthy and it knows it. I had to get a footlong…I had to also get turkey and stuffing crisps. Also to accompany this crimbo deluxe meal I had nics home made mince pies…yum. I went out to do some christmas shopping and failed miserably so thought I needed a small christmas boost. The gravy made it really, I knew it would. There was something slightly filthy and pot noodlish about it appealed to me…almost like I didn’t want to be seen eating it…so for that alone I’ll give it a 9 ha. Wouldn’t have another one I think but it is filthy good. It’s all gravy.

Ingredients:
Turkey, stuffing, gravy and onion

So that’s put subway at the top of the stack so far…I know it can be beaten though…there is a filthier christmas sandwich out there I know it!

Christmas Sandwich : Boots

Monday, November 10th, 2008

ah yes…GO ON BOOTS!

It was only a matter of time before I got round to boots. I think I lived off these right through to christmas last year. Boots meal deals…we all know they’re amazing. I was a bit disappointed to discover I couldn’t christmas up my snack or juice included in the meal deal.

Ingredients:
Turkey, bacon, pork, sage and onion stuffing, lettuce? (two different kinds?) and cranberry sauce

Best yet…much nicer than pret. Had a nice peppery after taste…tick. And if I remove the savings from said meal deal the sandwich would have cost £1.07. I’ll give it 8 of of 10…if it had gravy…would have been a 10 easy…actually i’ll give it an 8.5 just because it was served by a happy austarlian man.

Christmas Sandwich: Pret

pret…lettuce?

They’re everywhere…I can’t keep up! Today I went Pret…safe!. They had a few christmas sandwiches…a range some might say…including a veggie christmas sandwich…they’re nutters at pret. I had to go classic…

Ingredients: british turkey (very specific), cranberry sauce, stuffing, mayo and lettuce?

Dunno why they put lettuce in it…who has lettuce with their christmas dinner…madness. Also They give 10p to their own homeless charity…sounds a bit suspect to me. So i’ll give this a 7 out of 10 just cause it was a bit pricier but but did actually put some money towards charity.

marks and spencers christmas sandwich

I love christmas…and I love sandwiches. When the two combine it duth make me very happy. That’s why this year I’m going to review every christmas sandwich glasgow has to offer. Off the starting blocks early this year with marks and spencers offering.

Ingredients:
turkey, ham, stuffing & cranberry chutney

Interesting they threw ham in the mix…This sandwich slightly let down by the fact it’s in a baguette…They’re always hard work. But a good start. Marks and spencers I’ll give a 7 out of 10…just for sheer girth.
