New Toys!

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

New toys…new toys! Brilliant ordered this it’s awesome. Basically it’s a bendy tripod that sticks to anything. Just been playing around with it really…it’s pretty sturdy though. This is my journey to work in the morning takes just under 20 mins…so I squeezed it just under 3…Would have went less but it didn’t do the music justice.

i'm live!

It’s official…I’m Live. Having recently found out xbox live is free (to a certain extent) I set it all up and got a free month of xbox live gold. Brilliant!. For someone who would rather stay in than go out, stay up till all hours and play games it is quite genius.

The funniest bit is playing games online and speaking to other geeks through the ridiculous looking headset…I don’t mind it, There’s a certain satisfaction I get sitting round my house looking like an idiot.

If you’re looking for me my tag is bitsOfBobs…woohoo

lacie brick 250gb hd

Check out this puppy, It’s not very often I get excited about geeky computer stuff, but when they disguise it as some of my favourite toys I get very excited indeed. This is my New 250gb Harddrive. That’s right, It’s a giant USB piece of LEGO…AWESOME I’m practically fizzing with excitement. Where does it go from here? I’ll hopefully get a dvd writer disguised as a giant parma violet.

xbox at work...get in

As if work wasn’t fun enough, stroke of genius on daves behalf for noticing that the monitors we use at work take a video input. We had an xbox floating round the office that nobody used so now it’s taken up residence at my desk. Brilliant. got 4 controllers on it, monkeyball is always a crowd pleaser. Hopefully we’ll get an office nintendo wii, was going to take my gamecube but there’s no room for my bongos…oh the dilemma.

Screamin Jay Hawkins

Recently been using last.fm this is genius. Apparently it’s been round for ages i’ve just chose to ignore it. Seems like they have every song under the sun and you basically choose some tags to search from whether it be genres or bands and it fires back a continuous stream of awsome music. It’s like one of your mates who says “if you like that you’ll love this album i bought the other day” , but never actually gives you it…last.fm delivers the goods with lots of random results it’s awsome. Also managed to find a plugin for wordpress which shows you what i’ve been listening to (over on the right)…Brilliant!

This is where i had my first encounter with Screamin Jay hawkins…this guy is genius…heard a load of his music and it was awsome, but i think the video just backs it all up. He’s like some weird voodoo james brown.

My fancy shiny new plastic geetar

There is a thin line between being a geek and thinking your cool however the line where you get respect for actually being cool is a very long way away. A new toy arrived at the office while I was away, and my was it in a substantial box. A birthday present from my brother…A stroke of genius on his behalf. I would like to make it known now that he had one before me (both of us now claim to play the guitar). Had to put it back in the huge box and carry it home just for the sheer embarrassment of being seen to have bought a 2/3 sized plastic guitar for my playstation…I think i got away with it. Now my fingers ache…how rock ‘n’ roll is that?

Completed it on easy and was particularly proud of my rendition of Bostons more than a feeling…Rock on!

Smile…

my new camera oooooo fancy

Got back from London only to find the camera I ordered from pixmania had arrived the day after I left. Typical. My old fuji 50i finally died after 4 years of abuse. Missed some quality photo oppertunities in London, Including London eye, some amazing toy shops and me trying to rugby tackle a fox.

Pixmania who’s slogan reads “Low prices guaranteed. Permanent stock.” did leave me waiting for over a month , even worse they sent me the memory card and the carry case pretty much the day after I ordered everything…Funny Bastards. To top it all the final insult, everytime I log into the UK site it redirects me to the French one.

Oxygen 8

OXYGEN 8

This thing is genius, I have no musical talent of any sort other than I own a load of CDs so must have picked some up on the way. I think my theory may have flaws in it but it’s good fun all the same. M-Audios Oxygen 8 keyboard hooks up through USB 2.0 and needs no power cable…GENIUS! It integrates quite nicely into Reason 3.0 you can map all the knobs to whatever you want. Not really bothered though cause i’ve found out making music is not as easy as you think. Made loads of little annoying 10 second loops for my flash site but struggling after that.

It’s relatively easy to pick up and set up, Also having no knowledge of how to play the piano doesn’t really hinder you any (it would help of course) but there is only so many renditions of “when the saints go marching in” you can do before it wears a bit thin.

There are loads of instruments built into reason 3.0 but the best fun is putting them through mad squelchy filters. All in all great fun and would recommend it to anyone even just for a laugh…I’ve had many a night with it hooked up through my stereo doing a bit of improv. It’s certainly an eye opener into how much effort goes into making a song…even 2Unlimited…whoop

WACOM WACOM WACOM

My First Wacom

Bought this a while ago but it’s worth a mention, my Volito 2 wacom tab for a measly £40 from John Lewis. Only snag is it’s PC only, however after looking online was informed through some preference jiggery pokery would work fine…these turned out to be lies. The next one up is around £75 and is dual platform but i went against it and bought a PC instead…unfortunately not for the difference.

Once installed it’s adds pressure sensitive options to both flash and Photoshop. These are awsome. The amount of time i spent with a mouse trying to make something look hand drawn or playing around with line weight endlessly undoing…made me feel the fool. It makes photoshop a doddle for cutting out stuff. Takes a bit of getting used to and you’ll no doubt delete and move a few files by accident first. But go on…Go for it…essential for doodling.

Don’t be fooled though the pen doesn’t magically float like that, but it might on the more expensive one.
