Coffee to go

Milk & 2

I had a bit of an art attack moment while sitting down at work quaffing copious amount of freeze dried coffee, could you use coffee granules as watercolours? You can (And it was surprisingly nice to use). I used just a teaspoon of granules but used boiling water for mixing, it was actually easier to use luke warm before becoming almost impossible with cool water. It was quite difficult to get a nice solid dark colour as it was just too sticky and didn’t look nice. Just a bit of fun trying to use more textures and colours in my illustration.

Bean & gone.

Also turned it into a monster repeat pattern which you can find here.

Another great little drawing challenge from comic artist James Howard (@themooks) Once again there’s tonnes of great entries over on his tumblr.

I love most of the stuff from the Coen brothers and their obsession with killing steve buscemi, but there’s some I love much more than others. I made my decision based on which one I had seen the most, I love the big lebowski. It’s in my top 10 easy so it was a bit of a no brainer…but which characters? there’s so many in that film to choose from, so I thought I would do a few. The dude had to be in (Jeff Bridges), Walter Sobchak (John goodman), Jesus Quintana (John Tuturro) and the stranger (Sam Elliott). I had originally just thought of doing the 2 Jeffrey Lebowski’s but there’s too many great characters in it to limit it (If I had more time I would do them all!)

You can see a bigger version of the illustration over on my Flickr.

It was a great excuse to watch it again, If you’ve never seen it I highly recommend…the dude abides.

DIY ukulele

Monday, August 26th, 2013

I was given this Ukulele kit for my birthday (thanks guys!) and my word was I excited about making it. I had never seen these and can’t even tell you where it came from as it was a present. The instructions were easy to follow and the actual bits are surprising well made, even if you were to build it without painting, it would still look great. The great thing about the set is it’s all completely blank so you can paint it up before fixing it together (be aware of this when laying out designs). The neck connects to the body with a wooden dove joint (be warned though the kit doesn’t come with wood glue which is necessary) and most of the other fixtures are screwed in place. It doesn’t make a lot of mess to build which is nice, I just made mine in front of the tv. The wood glue does take 24hrs to set and must be held tightly in place while doing so.

I worked back from what acrylics I had, I painted everything a base white first which didn’t take long at all. Then I sketched out some fridge magnet letters (making sure that randomly a swear word did not appear) after this I drew lines over the top with a 0.8 uni pin marker. I left it as it was but there is the option of giving it a clear gloss finish to seal it in. Biggest problem I have now is tuning it, I play guitar and can tune that but am struggling, for time being a certain little someone seems happy enough with it.

you can find a bigger picture to have a proper nosey up on my flickr.

A rather lovely bit of work fell out the doors of dogdigital this morning, I was lucky enough to illustrate up the whole job. It was a mammoth task as every element was hand drawn.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of T in the park we made a series of facebook apps, the illustration was designed specifically for facebook and can be found here, if however facebook isn’t your thing you can also play a web version here. You’re looking for 30 artists hidden somewhere in the crowd, head on over you might even win some VIP tickets!

Big thanks to all the designers at Dog who chipped in with the equally as massive job of colouring in and all the geeky developers with their facebook voodoo.

Guest @ Grays

Friday, June 21st, 2013

Last year I was asked to do a talk at Gray’s school of art to the students about some of my process and design in general. I had never done any kind of public speaking before this but jumped at the chance, I prepared a visual presentation to follow but didn’t write anything and just winged it. I don’t really need to explain any more you get the gist if you watch the video. This was my rather lovely but intimidating view…I should point out it was full when I did the talk 🙂

After my talk I gave a workshop on doodle gifs in photoshop, it was a great experience and great to meet all the students who were brimming with enthusiasm and see some of the great work that’s coming out of Grays.

It’s worth having a look through the archives of Guest @ grays they have had some great guest speakers, you can find them all here.

A little bit of fun for #DrawFuturama. I enjoyed making my Calvin and Hobbes cut so thought I would have another go and cut the whole thing out of card, painted it and layered it up.

I love Labyrinth, I own it on DVD and have actually watched it to death and need to buy another copy. The characters are perfect, all of them…and you even see new ones EVERY time you watch it.

Since starting back into full time employment from freelancing I now find myself with a lunch hour to play with, a whole hour! So this week i’ve been collectively doodling Labyrinth, just the good guys. I would quite like to get all these characters together for a poster but there’s been a bit of twitter banter this week regarding copyright infringement on characters and the line between fan art and commercial art for sale which has scared me off a bit…but i’ve decided to ignore it all and go ahead until it becomes an issue. All of next week I’ll be working on background and layout of the poster.
