Back of?…really?

back of one…really?

This argument has been around a while. When is the back of one? Some people claim it to be after one?…after?…yes after…even though the word back implies behind?

But 1:00 would now be behind us.

Roll on the back of 2.

I am NEVER allowed to say the phrase ‘back of’ in the presence of my mother as she always cries: “When the hell is that”.

“The answer Mater”, I reply “is just after”.

Always has been, always will be.

Definately after - although Sam would argue the other way

To imply it’s before, is to suggest that each hour is a little person, facing the future while the sneaky minutes of time come up from behind it and then pass in front of it. Such a suggestion is, however, stupid.

After after after!!! I used to argue loads with wee Lynnie about this all the time before I adopted the technique for my very own. I reckon it means around 20 past! I use it as the excuse of why i’m always late

Definitely after. I see it like being over the back of the hour, in the same way you’d say over the back of a hill or something… On the far side of something, if that makes any sense at all. Probably not.

Nic, I’d have to disagree with you about the 20 past thing tho, to me it’s certainly no more than 10 past, in fact I’d probably say it’s up to 4 minutes past, cos as soon as it’s 5 past, i’d say it’s 5 past, and once you’ve said 5 past, there’s no way you can go back to saying the back off.

I’m a lady, I’m always later than boys

A further note - using the sam system, if you were to put back the date of an event - would that mean it was moved to before the original date?

ct you’ve been thinking about that for a very long time…very good though…but i still agree with sam :D …sorry rather he agrees with me
